Spring 2011 runways are always brimming with gorgeous bright colours after a long, dark winter. One of this season's hottest trends is colour blocking, while you may think this trend can only be pulled off on the runways it’s actually very fun and easy to wear as long as you know how! This is about lightning bolts of colour; shocking pink, flaming orange, neon-lime, fiery red, fluorescent violet and electric blue. It's the idea to wear several of these together and  to make the contrast as sharp and bright as possible, all in the name of fashion!
DO! Try out this trend - While the idea of colour blocking may be scary, you don’t have to go head first with the trend all at once. Just start with a single colour blocked piece for example a top or skirt and ease your way in.
DON’T! Be afraid of mixing unexpected colours - While the idea of mixing orange, green and purple in one outfit may sound just plain weird, it is all about how you wear the colours that make the outfit work. Mixing solid, colourful separates is great for color blocking; take example from Gucci’s Spring 2011 collection, as seen on Camilla Belle (Left).
DO! Colour block in the same colour family - Another great way to colour block is by keeping your outfit in the same general colour spectrum. Imagine a sky blue Cami, with sea blue puff-ball Skirt, you just can't beat it!
DON’T! Go overboard - Colour blocking can be very tricky, Just that one extra unnecessary colour and your potentially great outfit is spoiled. Keep your colour combination to a minimum as the perfect colour blocked outfit will have no more than three to four colors in the mix.
DO! Tone down with neutral pieces - A great colour blocking technique is to mix brights with more gentle tones. You can offset a bright, colourful top section with a more neutral bottom section, vice-versa.
DON’T! Wear colour-blocked clothes and accessories all at once. - The key to colour blocking is balance! Avoid a major clash by keeping accessories minimal when wearing colour blocked clothes. Similarly, when wearing a less attention seeking outfit keep the spotlight on your colourful accessories, such as handbagsjewellery and shoes.
